The Real Housewives of New Jersey: Season One

Love Love Love It!
I promised I would not buy this because I have seen it a million times on Bravo but of all the "Housewives" franchises, New Jersey is my favorite! Atlanta used to be but there is something more genuine and organic about the drama between this particular group of ladies. I'm anxiously waiting for Season 2 to begin next month for even more table flipping!

I love the relationship between the sisters Caroline and Dina. With their sister-in-law Jacqueline and close friend Theresa, the odd "woman" out is Danielle. You really want to root for her but there's something about her that makes that a little difficult. I don't know if her past has hardened her (which it more than likely did), but her caustic and biting tongue are a little hard to take at times.

If you haven't checked out this series, indulge just once...you may also love love love it!

Be prepared to laugh
I like this show. Some of the ladies are little over the top. But aren't we all?

Great first season.
I really enjoyed the first season of this housewives. It was packed full of intense drama and a little catfighting, as all housewives are. I'm waiting to watch season 2--it's on right now--until they run a marathon and I can't wait! Also recommend Skinny Italian: Eat It and Enjoy It Live La Bella Vita and Look Great, Too!.

Kanon: The Complete Series - S.A.V.E.

I bought this one for myself, actually...
I've been watching Anime now for a while. Basically I got started because my daughter wanted something else to watch after Teen Titans stopped making new episodes. I like the idea of having cartoons that aren't brainless or devoid of feeling. I have bought a lot that we watch together, but some of the Anime with more complex storylines I thought might be beyond her (She's 10), but she surprised me with getting a lot more about the stories than I would have thought. We watched Shuffle together and she will frequently sit down with me and ask to watch it again. So I started looking for some similar titles and I happened upon Kanon.

Parents:
There is absolutely no fan service in this Anime. (Fan Service means scantily clad scenes put into the show for no other reason than exciting pubescent boys) This is what's called a Shojo Anime, or an anime that is meant for young to teen aged girls, and it shows. Kanon relies more on imagery, storytelling, and dialog to move the...

Timeless Anime Storytelling
It's almost impossible to find any reviews of Kanon that refrain from comparing it to the show Air. Now that Funimation has acquired the rights to bring both of these (already similar) shows out just one week apart will likely do little to differentiate one from the other. Having just watched the two series literally back to back, I can attest to the fact that Kanon succeeds in many areas where Air comes short. Yes there are some similarities between the two that will warrant direct comparison throughout my review but in actuality, Kanon is certainly more emotionally taxing in its prose and scope. Well before I get ahead of myself here, let's start at the beginning, shall we?

Released across 4 discs, Funimation is packaging up TBS Animation's Kanon in a complete series box set. The packaging is quite appropriate if slightly mysterious in its rear panel summary. Inside is a pair of beautifully artistic thin packs, each of which contains two discs. The choice of whites...

An emotionally moving, hilarious mystery/drama
Kanon is Kyoto Animation's second of three adaptations they have done of Key's visual novels. Kanon (2006) is preceded by Air TV (2005) and followed by Clannad (2007). These three series are not connected, but share some character design aesthetics and the formula of "main male character interacts with various female characters." That said, of the three, Clannad is the only one that can be classified as a harem show.

As this review's title suggests, Kanon is equal parts mystery and drama, with a good dose of comedy thrown in. There are also elements of the supernatural and romance genres present here, however, it's important to remember that Kanon is, primarily, a mystery drama. The reason it's important to remember that is this: I've seen many fans of the more popular anime Clannad (which substitutes the mystery for more of a focus on romance) come to Kanon expecting a similar experience, only to find Kanon lacking because the romantic relationships aren't as fully...

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

Stands On It's Own As A GREAT Film Despite Title
I have to say I was somewhat horrified when I saw the trailer for this; it looked very generic and unintersting. The first thought in my head after hearing about this collaboration of Herzog and Cage was 'trainwreck'. I mean, I knew it would be at least an interesting wreck, but I was not expecting much. I was dead wrong.

Also, let me say that the original film by Abel Ferrara is one of my all time faves, and Harvey Keitel's performance is the answer I automatically give to anyone who asks what my all time favorite film performance is.

That being said.....

While the first film is dark and just brutal, this film is actually quite funny. With the exception of drug addict cops and gambling debts, the films are quite different. The first was def more in your face w/both it's graphic portrayal of gutter life and the ever-present religious overtones. This film is far more subtle, both in it's scenery and supporting cast, all across the board I might add;...

Fear and loathing in New Orleans
Who could have guessed that the man who helmed art house classics like "Fitzcarraldo", "Woyzeck" and "Aguirre the Wrath of God" would one day make a film entitled "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call-New Orleans"? Then again, one might argue that the iconoclastic Werner Herzog's career would be nothing, if not perennially unpredictable.

Herzog's latest film, arguably adorned with the year's most unwieldy title for squeezing onto a marquee, is a (sort of) sequel to Abel Ferrara's controversial 1992 neo-noir, "Bad Lieutenant" which was about a drug and gambling-addicted NYC homicide investigator. In that film, Harvey Keitel gave a fearless and maniacal performance as a "cop on the edge" who made most of the criminals he was paid to apprehend look like choir boys. Not an easy act to follow-but Nicholas Cage proves to be more than up to the task here.

To my observation, Cage has demonstrated two basic personas in his repertoire over the years. First, there is the...

Nicholas Cage At Long Last Returns To His Roots--with Werner Herzog
We all know the Nicholas Cage of recent years who seemingly has made one hackneyed movie after another just to indulge yet another big pay check and spending spree. Those of us who had been following him from the beginning, who loved his quirky indie films with offbeat directors, were horrified at what he'd become. Now he has teamed with the ultimate indie, offbeat director, Werner Herzog, to reclaim his roots. I believe that both Herzog and Cage have made a movie that is an extended metaphor about post Katrina New Orleans. Cage IS that post Katrina beleaguered city. He starts out the film injured and heroic and then zig zags through the rest of the film exhibiting the behavior of a post traumatic stress disorder patient who is untreated, like such a soldier from Vietnam or Iraq. For Herzog's part, he's always been about imagery and metaphors and he doesn't disappoint here in rendering the ultimate imagery and metaphor for post Katrina New Orleans. This is a very different movie...

Ben 10: Alien Force, Vol. 6

DVD Review
I definitely love watching Ben 10 Alien Force! The entire concept of the ability to transform into aliens is just awesome! The show is great and action-packed too!

Good volume.
Well done volume but would have really liked to have each season separately. Whatever, I wanted the series and this was just a minor glitch.

As expected...
...Amazon came through with prompt delivery and nice packaging. My son loves Ben 10, so he was extremely excited to find this gift waiting for him after school. I too love this show. It is one of the rare animated shows that has nice scripts, great voice talents, and splendid animation. My son and I also like that the series progresses with characters aging and developing their skills.

Rivals of Sherlock Holmes: Set 2

British Victorian Mystery Holmes-less but Perfect
13 invigoratingly written plots in "The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes-Set 2".
Different appealing sleuth characters for each episode averaging 51 minutes. Detailed late-Victorian sets, both indoors and out make this restored TV series worthy of 21st century viewing. Authentic costuming and location detail perfection makes one wish to have lived in the late 1800s. An absence of background music adds to the period authenticity. Top-notch performances of some of the best British actors and actresses of the day.
__Although unrated, this set does have one episode with a bit of nudity.

Bonus: SUBTITLES assist in the occasional strong dialect. Also included are detailed profiles of all the authors making history with these crime investigators of Victorian days. What a bonus for mystery story readers who would like to continue with these great crime solvers. The bonus material lists many of the writers' other written works.

Top Drawer Classic Series That Has It All
"The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, Set 2" is the second installment in a classic television series of British mysteries that was produced by Thames Television, premiered on the ITV Network in the United Kingdom in 1973, and was seen on public television in the United States in the 1970s. It is released in a four volume boxed set, consisting of thirteen episodes, and runs approximately 659 minutes in total. It comes with bonus features on the rival detectives and their creators, and. thank you, Acorn Media Group, subtitles. The first series, also 13 episodes, aired in 1971, and won a BAFTA for best design: it has already been released in DVD format.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods, there was plenty of poverty, social unrest, and crime in the world, in Europe, and in England. There were also the riveting detective stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring Sherlock Holmes, and his sturdy assistant, Watson. And there was...

GREAT
This was awesome! I really enjoyed this series though I liked some characters more then others. While it is a little old it is well done, I particularly like the firts episode and the next one with Max Carrados; a blind but very observant detective.

Word Girl: Earth Day Girl

Word Girl Earth Day girl
Like Martha Speaks and many of the other PBS shows Word Girl introduces 16 volcabulary words to reinforce word meanings in a fun and entertaining way. Word Girl (like Superboy) comes from another planet and gain her super skills such as flying, super strength and most importantly super brain power from being on earth. Just as Superboy had Krypto as a partner, Word girl has the monkey Captain Huggy Face. The 8 episodes on this DVD include one episode of each of the bad guys that appear in the opening credits and some that don't. One big different between Superboy and Word girl is that Word girl's ditzy family has no knowledge that their daughter and the identical Word Girl are the same person. Even her brother the president of the Word Girl fan club.

First we start off with the Earth Day episode with Birthday girl a misguided kid who thinks every day is her birthday and grows in size and strength when she gets upset. It an okay episode though other people might find this...

Worrrrrd up!
My daughter and I both love WordGirl so I was very happy to have a DVD that I can pop in whenever we need it instead of having to worry about if I have an episode of DVR and which TV it's recorded on. The lessons that WordGirl teaches are always great and I really appreciate the little bits of humor that are thrown in for the parents as well. It's nice to have a show that I can watch with my daughter and feel equally entertained.

A gift for my grandaughter
if your child watches the PBS series, then this requires no comment, other than to warn you that episodes are edited in such a way that Captain Huggyface's little dance near the end of each episode, is taken out. My granddaughter, who loves to dance with the little monkey, was disappointed.

Movie Marathon Collection: Flashback Comedies (For Love or Money / Casual Sex? / The Secret of My Success / The Hard Way / Career Opportunities)

fun
You get more for the money when you buy this way. There are four enjoyable movies here, so who wouldn't buy this product?

Good Selection
The selection is a good one of older romantic comedies. I enjoyed them and recommend them to friends. They were mainly for my wife to enjoy.

This won't be very helpful maybe...
I bought this set elsewhere a few years ago, and I have only watched two of the movies, Career Opportunities and Casual Sex. Thing is, I only bought the set for Casual Sex. I happened to catch it on one late night on HBO (I had never heard of it before) and I absolutely fell in love with it! It's sappy, but it's honest and cute. When I watched Career Opportunities what sticks in my mind are the shelves of cassette tapes in the store and how that was completely normal back then. I remember those days!

Have Gun Will Travel: Season Four, Vol. 1

Kick-Butt Review and Recap
For anyone not aware, Season Four of HAVE GUN-WILL TRAVEL was the second best season of the series (following the superb Second Season). Frank Pierson was the producer, having recently replaced Sam Rolfe, the creator of the TV western. Rolfe came to blows with Richard Boone and conflict behind the camera led to Rolfe leaving the series and quitting on CBS. Pierson got along VERY well with Boone, allowing the actor to take control of the series (including directing a few episodes). Season Three was mildly weak as a result of Boone's insistence that each episode be filmed in two days instead of three, so he and actor Martin Gabel could play the starring leads in Norman Corwin's THE RIVALRY on Broadway. The season's filming had to conclude early in order for them to appear on schedule. With Season Four, there was no rush-job and each episode was made with care. In fact, at Boone's pleasure, the series became a text book example of how an actor can explore the character he played and you...

Best Season of the Series
After a couple years of hesitation, CBS has finally released HGWT Season Four. In my honest opinion, Season Four is the best season of the series. Hey Girl replaces Hey Boy (the actor departed for a career opportunity that ultimately failed) and there is chemistry between Paladin and Hey Girl. I think it should be noted that the radio program of the same name had Missy Wong before the TV version premiered Hey Girl and I suspect the radio program influenced the decision to replace Hey Boy with a female.

Some of the best episodes of the series appear in Season Four. I noticed that CBS also decided to release only half of the season. True, they will make more money splitting the season in half, rather than package the entire season in one box set as they did with the three prior seasons. It comes down to economics. The second and third season failed to meet the studio's expectations so this was a compromise. And God bless CBS for continuing the release of HGWT Season Four...

Have Gun Issues
Like many reviewers, I was not thrilled with CBS' decision to do a high-price split season with Season 4 of "Have Gun Will Travel". I did purchase the set, but it wasn't an automatic decision and I stalled on making the purchase for a few weeks to see if the price would be adjusted. However, once I received the set I did notice that the picture quality appeared to be superior to the quality of the first 3 seasons that were released. The picture and audio seem much crisper. And as far as I can tell, CBS did not mess with the original music, as they unfortunately have done with such a classic TV series as "The Fugitive". I was disappointed that they did not include the "Wire Paladin" feature that was a part of the first 3 seasons, which gave you background information on the episodes and the guest stars that appeared in a particular episode. Overall, I'm glad that the show is being released again and I hope that if sales for this half season are not as spectacular as CBS hopes...

Alice in Wonderland

Stars and sets make this "Alice" shine, despite problems with this DVD release
I have vague memories (I think) of seeing this on TV as a kid. It's something of a holy grail to nostalgia buffs of course given that nearly every Paramount star who was anybody in 1933 - including most famously Cary Grant, W.C. Fields and Gary Cooper - appears in it, and it's never been on video before. Its reputation isn't all that great though, and the film was shorn of about 15 minutes on reissues which apparently (see below) have been lost for good. So it was with a bit of trepidation that I, inveterate Alice-lover, took a gander.

I needn't have worried. Sure, this suffers from all of the defects one would expect of such a lavish star-vehicle from the day - too much rushing through scenes (even at its original 90 minutes, trying to shunt together big hunks of both "Alice" and "Through the Looking Glass" is going to feel thin), an Alice (Charlotte Henry) who is both too old and just not expressive enough for the part, a director (Norman Z. McLeod) sometimes content...

Universal is cheap!!
I am tired of Universal putting out these crappy versions of releases. UCLA has an entirely RESTORED print of this film in their library and it could easily have been used as a resource for this dvd release. This so-called restoration per other review sites, lists this dvd release's picture as minimal with crack and speckles on the film. As for the 90 minute version, I can tell you for a FACT the original film was 90 mins. The missing scenes involved Alice's sister and the Reverend and his concern about Alice's strange behavior. I saw it on television back in the late 1970's in Baltimore. There was a man who had the entire print who lived in DC and he allowed the local station to use it to show. What happened to the man's print, I don't know, but UCLA also has a complete audio soundtrack on tape for this film and also a separate sound effects and music track which could EASILY have been used on this DVD as an extra and very well may have the extra minutes. They are just trying to make...

EDITED version, totally BARE BONES packaging.
other reviewers have mentioned it; i'll second them: THIS IS THE EDITED 77-minute version (single disc, universal release, upc# 025195053563, just so we're all clear on that); NOT the full 90 minute original.

transfer quality and sound are both 'okay.' not great, not poor - just okay.

single disc, extremely bare bones packaging. NO special features whatsoever. yet another missed opportunity in the mishandling of a classic film.

if you LOVE this version of the story, buy it. if you're a die-hard alice/carroll fan, buy it. if you absolutely NEED everything cary grant, gary cooper or w.c. fields (or even edward everett horton, baby leroy, or sterling holloway) ever attached their names to, buy it. or you could wait until a miracle occurs and a studio somewhere starts to take pride in its back catalogue, releasing films uncut, unedited (hays code cuts are still in effect, really? in THIS day and age?!), with at least SOME minimal effort put into...

Strawberry Shortcake: The Berryfest Princess

Great!
My 3 girls love this movie-ages 2,4,6 and will all watch it together. Better than the 2009 new Strawberry Shortcake movie.

Wow! Vivid colors.
My 3 year old likes the movie and will usually watch it all. I still can't believe how vivid the colors are. The storyline is interesting but probably more appropriate for 5-7 year olds. Personally, I like the younger Strawberry like I had as a girl. But, I guess, Strawberry and I needed to grow up a little....

Strawberry Shortcake
My 2 year old daughter loves strawberry shortcake. This is the 23rd strawberry shortcake movie I have purchased for her. I buy each new one as they come out. All of the movies have singing in them and I find my daughter trying to sing along with strawberry and her friends. I like her new look too, it's really cute. I grew up with the original strawberry shortcake in the 80's, they have made great improvements. Some kind of trouble always finds strawberry but she and her friends always find a way to fix it. It's cute to watch.

Poltergeist: The Legacy Season 2 (Amazon.com Exclusive)

Revised review 5/3/10 new inventory
Received my copy today. I preordered & got it for the price of $29.99

It comes with a total of 11 discs. 2 episodes per disc. There are some issues about this: (1) the episodes are out of order, (2) all the episodes are listed on the back of the box, but you don't know what is on each disc, I made a list so I will know, (3) one episode titled The Choice is missing. It is listed on the box, but is not on any disc.

I have scanned through all of them & the quality looks good to me. I did not know anything about MOD so I had concerns about the quality, but everything I see looks & sounds good.

I hope seasons 3 & 4 will be released also. I don't understand the price jump, but if it does come down I think it is worth purchasing.

Revised 5/3/10

All 22 episodes are included & they are in order.

There is still 11 discs with 2 episodes each. Discs 1-4, 5-8, 9-11. It...

Thrilled season 2 was finally released!
I am THRILLED to finally have an official release of POLTERGEIST: THE LEGACY Season 2 after waiting well over a decade for it to come out. The set came nicely packaged in three separate DVD cases. The artwork on the front cover of each case is as shown on Amazon and includes "Discs #-#" on the cover and spine. Each DVD-R disc has the same MGM logo & background from the cover and is labeled with the title of the series and the disc number. I pre-ordered the set when it first became available on Amazon and got it for $29.99 + free shipping.

Here are the episodes on each of the DVD-R discs I received with the order # they were first aired in according to IMDB:

1: The Devil's Lighthouse #13 & Lights Out! #3
2: Fear #18 & Rough Beast #9
3: The Spirit Thief #4 & The New Guard #1
4: Lives in the Balance #8 & Dark Angel #7
5: Black Widow #2 & Shadow Fall #16
6: The Gift #5 & Transference #6
7: Repentance #12 & Ransom #10
8: Lullaby #14...

Good Picture and Sound
I'm one of the lucky ones who pre-ordered this at $29.99. Jill Moody's review is right on. The episodes seem a bit grainy at times, but I think that's purposeful---- to add to the mystery of the show. The episodes are indeed out of order and my disc #11 is also missing "The Choice" episode, but I think Amazon and MGM will probably make it good. I sent them an email and will let everyone know how things stand. But frankly, with the exception of the missing episode, I'm pretty pleased with the set.

ADDENDA 3/8/10: I talked to someone in Amazon's MOD department and he said they had read the reviews on the sets problems. They said they would definitely contact the company that manufactured this set and ask for a re-do. How long that will take is anyone's guess. But I've always believed in the "bird in the hand" philosophy and will keep my set until the problem is solved.

Joe Rogan: Talking Monkeys in Space

Totally not what I was expecting, but hilarious none the less
Joe Rogan's stand-up skills totally impressed me! I had never seen any of his comedy before this and I was blown away by how good he is. My favorite part was his joke about the talking dog from the anti-drug commercials and how if you were high and your dog started talking to you, your first reaction would not be to stop smoking but smoke more. He's hilarious!

Very funnyyyyyy!!
LOVE this!!! Joe Rogan is the man!!! He is so successful at so many things at once! Fear factor, fighting, and comedy!! I think it's hilarious when he talks about the talking dog for the anti drug commercials. DEFINITELY recommend this!!

I Sell the Dead [Blu-ray]

Great Horror/Comedy Hybrid
This movie has been getting good press in mags like "Fangoria" and "Rue Morgue." It can be rented at Blockbuster as one of their exclusives and is scheduled for a street release at the end of March. It is a low budget project, but one that's produced with a lot of class, wit, energy and a respect for the genre.

It involves a couple of low-life, but likable Burke and Hare-type grave robbers named Grimes and Blake, and their misadventures supplying fresh corpses for a local doctor/mortician (Angus Scrimm). They unearth the usual rotten and not-so-rotten corpses, vampires, zombies and even an extraterrestrial (!), but their most dangerous adventure comes in the form of a sick, violent family of grave robbers who don't appreciate the competition: The House of Murphy. The daughter, who was burned beyond recognition, wears a mask identical to the burned daughter in the classic French film "Les Yeux sans Visage" ("Eyes Without a Face")-great touch! The son grinds up his victims'...

A pleasant surprise
I noticed this at my local Blockbuster. Brought it home without any real expectations, and was really very pleasantly surprised.
The movie revolves around Arthur Blake, a graverobber who is about to be executed, and Ron Perlman, the monk who is interviewing Blake before his execution. Perlman wants to know how Blake got started in graverobbing, what his career was like, and what happened to Blake's worst rival. Blakes' tale involves the dead, vampires, zombies, and aliens. It is somewhat bloody, but laced with humor. Worth watching!

This movie is right up my alley, but...
Great cast, great idea and stylish.... but it was missing something. It was neat to look at, but I never really connected to it.

There were a whole lot of good ideas, but not enough was done with them. The movie would have been better if it were longer to expand on the ideas or more focused. Most of Arthur's apprenticeship could have been cut for instance.

The horror wasn't particularly scary and the humor snicker worthy at best. Combined with the slow pacing, it's just too many strikes against the movie. It's a shame, because this movie has the cast and ingredients to be a genuine cult classic.

Deadliest Catch: Season Five

caught me
another year and again these guys have done another amazing job.the camera guys to have pulled out there courage to excell in making this a series that i'm hooked on.
cant wait now each year for the next series to come out . boats -rough seas -terrible weather- fun -excitement -some edge of your seat type entertainment if this is your cup of tea then i highly recommend this whole series.

Something I would never do!
I have really enjoyed all the season's of this show and was please to find a copy on Amazon.com. I know the two captains of the Time Bandit. My son grew up with them when we lived in Homer, Alaska so that makes the series even better. I purchased this for my best friend who lives outside of Homer and who does not get the series because of lack of cable in her area. Both of us knew Russel, Eddie, Josh - in fact all of the crew. She has a treat in store for her. Thanks to Amazon for carrying this DVD.

Awesome
We have all the seasons! To see the changes from season one to 5 is great. Looking forward to season 6 on DVD. The only drawback is you have to press play for each chapter. We bought this for our son who is not capable of pressing play and I keep this season at home so someone is always there to forward the next chapter. They should have made is continuous like the previous seasons. GREAT series.

Frances

On my Top Ten List
'Frances' is, quite frankly, one of the most powerful films I have ever seen, and definitely one of the most compelling tales I have seen on film. I saw this movie 17 years after it was first released, but a story such as this loses none of its' power with time, and I was moved, touched and amazed at the life of Frances Farmer, upon whose life this film is based.

First of all, let me say that I saw this on DVD. The DVD version of the movie is crystal clear, though the sound could have been sharper. Colors are crisp and vibrant, and the director's use of film in certain places to create a '30s effect is well-transferred. The only sore point is that there are no extra features on the DVD other than the scene selection. Perhaps a documentary on the star's life would have complimented the movie, but I'm not really complaining. That such an excellent film is available on DVD is gift enough.

The life of Frances Farmer remains one of the most shrouded-in-secrecy tales to come out of...

Jessica Lange's performance as Frances will haunt you
This is a welcome re-release of one of the very best movies of the 1980s. The DVD itself is a visual and sonic delight, and it comes with extras that are actually worth watching.

Jessica Lange's Oscar-nominated performance alone makes this an unforgettable film - it is clear that she studied Farmer's personality and mannerisms meticulously. She is totally disarming in this role. Kim Stanley is also deserving of her Oscar nomination, and the chemistry between the two makes for some emotionally exhausting scenes.

Frances Farmer was not mentally ill, not by any definition. Yes, she drank excessively at times, and used over-the-counter amphetamines, which contributed to key incidents of "erratic behavior." More than that, though, her brutally honest opinions, sarcastic wit, abrasive language, and her strong sense of self-determination aggravated those who wanted to use and control her.

She inspired vengeance in the hearts of studio moguls at Paramount,...

FRANCES FARMER, Betrayed Again
Ironically, this film is yet another Hollywood slap in the face to stage and screen actress Frances Farmer. Jeers to screenwriters Eric Bergren, Christopher DeVore and Nicholas Kazan for diluting the harrowing tragedy of her story by giving her a fictional long-term support system in the guise of "Harry York". O that the real Frances had such a loving and loyal ally ... but the truth, according to her autobiography and the brilliant biography "Shadowland" by William Arnold, is that Farmer walked through the hell of her life mostly alone and uncomforted.

The conceit of the screenplay is especially upsetting because so many other elements of the film are perfect. Jessica Lange gives a devastating, powerhouse performance as the misbegotten star, and she's matched every frame of the way by Kim Stanley (who two decades earlier played a Monroe-type character in "The Goddess") as Farmer's hellion of a mother, Lillian. These two actresses,...

Lodz Ghetto

An excellent, memorable work
I have been using this video in my courses since it was released. The film tells the story of the Lodz ghetto through a well-crafted mosaic of first-person accounts and archival films and photos. The former include ghetto diaries, chronicles, speeches by Rumkowski, posted SS "announcements," and similar. The latter include occasional images of contemporary Lodz overlaying images from the time of the ghetto. The voices, including Jerzy Kosiniski who "speaks" Rumkowski (what better choice?), are conveyed with power and precision. The selections read are as various and well-chosen as could be imagined. The work as a whole is somewhere between a documentary and a stark meditation, treating the unique complexity of the Lodz ghetto's history with both restraint and clarity.

Powerful and unique
Very powerful, moving chronicle of one Polish Jewish ghetto in WWII. As we watch,
its population shrinks from 200,000 souls to only 800 left by the liberation.
All the narration is taken from the diaries and writings of those who were actually
there, and the visuals include some amazing film and stills from the time. A few
historical details are frustratingly sketchy, and intense thought it was, in the end
I wasn't quite as emotionally overwhelmed as I expected. But overall one of the more
accessible and unique holocaust documentaries. I'd imagine it's intimate 1st person
narratives would help make the stories more 'real' for students, making this an
invaluable teaching tool.

Ninja Assassin [Blu-ray]

For Those of You that Want a Completely Honest Review
1. Are you a fan of the ninja mythos? If yes, continue
2. Do you like awesomely executed choreography and to be Entertained? IF yes, go on
3. Are you one of those people that sit back and watch ALL movies looking to be enlightened on the meaning of life and anything that doesn't make you think disgust you? If yes, Stop, you don't belong here. If yes, Continue...

When this movie was being thought up, there was one thing on the mind of the director. "How can I bring back the love of ninjas that I had as a young child?" His answer was to create this movie and update the premise of the ninja with the many cool things that have been done with the genre since the old days of Sho Kosugi's Revenge of the Ninja. This means, take all of the mythological aspects of the ninja:
Shadow walking (or melding with shadows)
The mind of a Ninja (Classic training Sequences that exist in all Martial Flicks
Wicked Sword play and creative use of weaponry
Agility...

Turkey isn't the only thing being carved this Thanksgiving
If you want some extremely bloody ninja action, you'll get enough for three movies with Ninja Assassin. I can't think of a film that has as many limbs being cut off or higher body count than this one. Maybe the first Kill Bill flick and that's really saying something. After reading a lot of reviews from the critics, I expected a horrible story and acting to go along with the carnage, but neither were that bad. I never heard of the lead actor, played by Rain, but he is suppose to be a big singer in Asia. His performance was on and off, but his physicality stole the show. I felt the scenes that showed the main character's training from a young boy to a man at a secret assassin fortress added some depth. That sensei doesn't mess around!

Even though ninjas prefer to engage in combat in the dark, I like how you can still see what is going on in most of the fights. The many action scenes are the highlights for sure. They are brutal beyond belief, but some of the blood was a...

Rain makes one Awesome Ninja!
OMG, I had no idea Rain was playing Raizo until the day before I went to watch the movie. I have to say that I was pleasantly suprised by his transformation from boy band hotty to Hot Ninja Assasin! I know he must have worked his butt off to get that body lean enough to do some of the actions in this movie. If you love blood/gore and ninja action then you will definately enjoy this movie. The synopsis was mentioned in the previous review so I won't go into that again, but I will say that the working chemistry between Rain and Naomi in this movie was relaxed and not ackward like in some movies in this genre like kiss of the dragon or Romeo must die where I get the feeling the actor/actress is acting rather than in a natural state of being. Sounds weird but I definately noticed the difference. I hope to see Rain in more lead roles, he makes one hellofa ninja.

For the Love of Grace

No surprises, but a good chick flick
This is one of those movies that the men in my family refer to as the "Hallmark formula". The successful young woman is on the career fast-track and is paired up with a man that is the same. Something life-changing occurs and the woman realizes she wants something (really someone) different, and luckily that something different is close at hand.

Grace is a very workoholic author of "how-to" books. She works in the same office with her best friend, who is being married at the opening of the movie. Grace, who rarely has time for their friendship anymore, is her maid of honor.

When Graces' apartment catches fire she is rescued by a recently suspended firefighter, Steve, who seems to have a death wish since his own wife died. He just happens to be passing by her place when the fire is getting out of control. Grace's second chance at life gives her a fresh perspective and it spills over in gratitude to the firefighter who saved her. There are barriers between them,...

For The Love Of Grace
This is a great movie. There is no suggestive dialogue, language, violence or sex scenes. Grace (Chandra West) writes How To Books, Mark Consuelos is a Fire Firefighter and Corbin Brensen is Chief of Firehouse 22. The firefighters when they aren't fighting fires or saving peoples lives cook gourmet meals. An off duty firefighter walks by Grace's house that is on fire. He saves her life. The next time that Hallmark airs this movie is January 24, 2010 at 7 pm, Feb. 13 at 3 pm and Feb 28 at 1 am. You will not be disappointed.

Loved~For the Love of Grace
I love hallmark movies and this one is moving to the top of my list of favorites.

This movie was made well, the story is solid with side stories between brothers, coworkers etc...All of the actors did a great job.

I really wish moviemakers would watch more movies like this and take notice that there's no need for graphic violence, profanity, and explicit scenes to make a quality film.

Dennis the Menace

My favorite movie as a kid!
If your looking for a great movie to watch with the family that can entertain your kids on a rainy day, this is definitely your movie! It can have you and your kids on the floor laughing, but yet have some mild scary moments.
This movie is based around Dennis a 5 and a half year old boy who gets into a lot of trouble because of his curiosity. He lives next to the old Mr. Wilson who often is the recipient of Dennis's curiosity. Meanwhile a crook comes through town and starts robbing house's.
Overall this is a classic film that never really get old and has 93 minutes of great entertainment. This movie definitely deserves 5 stars.

Classic '90s comedy.
"Dennis the Menace", directed by Nick Castle, is based on the hit 60's sitcom, by the same title.

PLOT SUMMARY: Mason Gamble stars as Dennis Mitchell, a young kid who just can't seem to stay out of trouble. He doesn't MEAN to cause trouble...he just well, does. Walter Matthau stars as Dennis's grumpy next door neighbor, Mr. Wilson, who can't STAND Dennis. When Dennis's parents go away (Robert Stanton and Lea Thompson), Dennis must stay with the Wilsons, and Mr. Wilson is extremely unhappy about this. But when Dennis gets out of line, Mr. Wilson gets so angry that he yells at Dennis, which makes Dennis run away. That's when the real trouble begins...Dennis encounters an old neighborhood thief, Switchblade Sam (Christopher Lloyd), who kidnaps Dennis, and soon Dennis learns that Switchblade Sam has stolen some items from the Wilsons' house (and others from his neighborhood), so it's up to Dennis to save the day.

MY OVERALL THOUGHTS: I haven't seen this film in a long time,...

Sweet and Charming
While this film does not break new cinematic ground; it was never intended to in the first place. Having said that, this is perhaps one of the most delightful, sweet and charming children's movie's I have ever seen. I say that with some amount of authority, as I have two young children, so watching children movies is something we do alot of.

What makes this movie so utterly unforgettable is the sweet charm displayed between Walter Matthau (Grumpy Mr. Wilson) and Dennis (Mason Gamble). There is a unique, understated quality to this movie, where the soundtrack is rather understated and in many scenes you simply watch young Dennis or Mr Wilson (or both) interacting in gentle, silent ways. The movie has become a favorite of my 4 1/2 year old girl (Dennis-like herself) to watch before she goes to bed. We have even memorized some of the scenes and act them out at dinner, like when Mr Wilson eats a piece of chicken that has accidently become victim to Dennis' paint & wood glob...

Castle in the Sky

Winsome fantasy
"Castle in the Sky" is a masterpiece of one of Japan's finest filmakers. There is a simple artistry to Miyazaki's stories. This is a children's film, but it is in the tradition of children's stories that appeal to all ages. A rare, pure fantasy, the film has the same magic as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" and other early Disney films.

I first saw this movie when it was released in US theaters as "Laputa the Floating Island." The mythical floating island of Laputa is taken from Swift's "Gulliver's Travels." Like Swift, Miyazaki cloaks a political statement with a fantasy, giving deeper meaning to his story. Environmentalism has always been central to his films, and "Castle in the Sky" is no exception.

Visual, the film is a literal flight of fancy. Much of the film takes place in the air. Air pirates travel in unwieldy flying machines. Giant dirigibles sail the skies. Travel by kite is an acceptable option. The animation is of the highest quality, as is the sound...

Spectacular Ghibli film in original Japanese, atrocious dub and sub
*Slight spoiler*
Also disclaimer: This review contains complaints galore so if you're not in the mood, it's best you pass this one by.

I love Studio Ghibli movies. There's a magical element of adventure and heart that are hard to find elsewhere. And Laputa is by far my favorite movie of all Ghibli movies I've seen (seen most of them). I think the English release unfortunately killed it. Note: The 2003 and the newer 2010 DVD versions both point to the same reviews. This review is based on the 2003 Disney American DVD release. It appears that the 2010 version reverts back to the original Japanese soundtrack, extra filler dialogue not present in the Japanese version have been removed. That said, the main points in the review - the choice of voice actors and change in dialogue - still apply. Also, below the title on the Amazon page, you'll see the list of actors as: Barbara Goodson (Actor), James Van Der Beek (Actor) - this is completely confusing as Barbara Goodson is...

Most Admired and Adored Miyazaki Film
Laputa, Castle in the Sky, is the most creative, ambitious, and adventurous Miyazaki film I have ever seen. I like Miyazaki's work very much for its grandeur, originality, and imagination. Sadly to say that Disney has lost its creative edge. It has been copying stories all over the world. Disney promised to release the Castle in the Sky video in 1999 but they failed to keep their promise. (Disney, please include the original Japanese soundtrack on the US release because I don't like the English voice actor behind Pasu.)

After 16 years since Castle in the Sky was first released in the theatres, I still consider it the creme da la creme of all anime movies. Certainly Laputa's art direction cannot compare to today's S/B CGI and S/B 3D animation. However, the story is much more fascinating and breathtaking than KiKi Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and even Princess Mononoke. Princess Mononoke is a graphically stunning piece of art but Castle in the Sky is a wonderful story...

South Park: The Complete Thirteenth Season

Goin' On Down to South Park for the Thirteenth Time
I've watched this show since it began when I was a fourth grader and it's weird to watch the boys have only grown one grade while I'm now four years out of high school. Season 13 of the show manages to continue the series longer than most animated shows still without killing what the show itself is meant to be, for the most part. This season if not all out great like I feel seasons 6,8 or 11 were is at least another solid season with stand out episodes. While the show did take a few more unscheduled trips to the silly end of things they still manage to be enjoyable for true fans and it hardly feels the show is selling out or risking becoming a satire of itself. Episodes this season are:

The Ring - When the Jonas brothers make Kenny's new girlfriend hot he starts wearing a promise ring like them only to become boring and a shell of his former self. [I'm in favor of anything that mocks the Jonas Brothers. I hate them so much]

The Coon - During times of great Woe...

54 years old and still laughing!
I have seen a few reviews about some of the seasons of South Park that just sort of irk me to no end. I have been watching this silly little cartoon since it's first show and STILL absolutely love it. I am always telling people that I think this is the best animated cartoon ever to air.

Season 13 just came out and it will soon join the other twelve in my collection. And yes, I have already seen the episodes and I enjoyed them.

Has it ever occurred to some of you naysayers that maybe it is just you, and not the show itself, that has changed?

I am 54 years old and I am still laughing my ass off at these little dudes.

This is not the traditional Box Set
I'm giving this negative review based on the deception of the product description. The product states that this is a box set. However, when my order arrived I received a single plastic DVD jewel case that consisted of three DVDs. I called Amazon and explained that I did not receive the standard DVD box set as advertised. I sent it back and they indicated they'll send the box set. Once again, they sent the same single plastic DVD jewel case. After contacting Amazon a second time they stated that they do not have the standard box set.

If you are an avid South Park fan as I am and looking to enhance your South Park collection, DO NOT BUY THIS SET. If you're not looking for the traditional box set and don't mind the plastic single jewel case then this DVD may be for you.

Did You Hear About the Morgans?

UNREALISTIC PLOT, FAR FETCHED, BUT FUNNY
Watch purely for entertainment--it's well worth a rental,& perhaps purchase. For Sara Jessica Parker & Hugh Grant fans, it's right up your alley. It's funny, even though the situation they find themselves in is a bit off-the-wall. The Wyoming setting is great and used well in applying situations for the couple to re-find themselves. Yes, it's a romance/comedy with a very nice romance HALF that those types of movie lovers will find worthy of 5-stars. The comedy is great also, including even some of the outtakes, and special features, including a bear episode with Hugh Grant getting as close as it takes. By the way, SUBTITLES ARE AVAILABLE.

It's not going to become a "classic" or talked about in years to come, or produce a great number of movie spin-offs. However, after you see the outcome, such a delightful finish, you will perhaps wish for a sequel of say, 15 years later, and see how the relationships are going, and a reunion back with Sheriff Clay Wheeler (Sam Elliott)of...

Hugh Grant Needs Better Scripts & Better Leading Lady
Sarah Parker's acting efforts always leave me underwhelmed. So I can't say she disappointed me in this film. I thought she was so-so which is what I always think about her acting. Hugh Grant, however, is a horse of a different color. He is a tremendous comic actor with exquisite timing. When he's got a good script and a good leading lady, he is unbeatable. His ABOUT A BOY is just one example of his performing at the top of his game. Nick Hornby was the writer on ABOUT A BOY though and he is first rate. The screenwriter of this film is no Nick Hornby. The premise is about a Manhatttan couple forced to hide out in the remote West in the witness protection program. They are married but separated yet it is quite obvious they will be getting back together. That's the whole movie. I can't say don't watch it because Grant is funny. He does the most with what he's got. The rest of the movie though is (thankfully) completely forgettable.

An unfunny fish out of water romantic comedy
The cover says "the perfect date movie!" How is this the perfect date movie? Its about a married couple having issues, because the man (Hugh Grant) cheated on the woman (Sarah Jessica Parker). They're seperated, getting a divorce, then when he appears to talk with her, they end up witnessing the murder of SJP's client.

Then they get stuck in witness protection together. Which is what Hugh wants, and of course SJP wants to get as far away from him as possible. He does what he can to get her back, and I'm sure you can guess how it comes out.

In witness protection, the movie becomes a fish out of water movie, as an Englishman and an upscale New Yorker are stuck in the country town of Ray, Wyoming with a sheriff and his wife the deputy. SJP as a New Yorker out of her element, was very unfunny and it should be so easy for her.

Another big problem with the movie is after seeing movie trailers for it, I felt like I had seen it before. My friends said the same...

Hawaii Five-O - The Complete Eighth Season

Five-0 is Improving With Age
Amazon suggests that reviewers tell what we would have wanted to know before we purchased this product. Well, I'll tell you: For the past few years, I have heard that, after Season 6, Five-0 really fell off. In my opinion, that simply is NOT true. Granted Five-0 changed after Season 6. It became more mature, taking a more intellectual look at issues and details. We certainly wouldn't have spent an hour in Season 1, learning about the art world, yet we did in Season 7 ("How to Steal a Masterpiece"), and we are all the better for it.

In Season 8, we continue to learn. In "Death's Name is Sam," we learn about heat-seeking surface-to-air missiles - hand-held ones, in fact. This was brand new technology in 1975, when this was filmed. Even now, it is fascinating to watch as McGarrett tries to divert the missile with flares in order to keep the aircraft from being shot down. Fortunately, the experimental effort was successful. But Season 8 isn't all about technology and...

I've already "booked" my copy of Season 8
Without a doubt, Hawaii Five-0 was one of the top 10 television shows that was ever produced for all-time. They certainly don't make TV shows like that any more. The quality of the previous 7 Seasons of Five-0 was always great, and I would certainly expect that Season 8 will follow in the same tradition. However, even if they produced it in Black and White, I'd still give it 5 STARS. By the time Season 8 had rolled around in 1975, some of the plots were not quite up to par like they were in some of the earlier Seasons, but I still love watching every one of them. A few years ago I previously purchased all 12 Seasons of Five-0 which were mainly just old copies that were probably made directly from TV broadcasts, which even included the commercials. And I've even enjoyed watching those old versions, no matter how poorly they were copied. As I'm sure you can tell I am huge fan of Hawaii Five-0 and I am now on Amazon.com's list to receive my copy of Season 8 when it finally comes out on...

Book 'em, Murder One
I must admit, Season 8 was the season that I started to tune out of Five-0. I'm a big fan of the first six seasons - for me, these seasons represent superb escapist television at its very best. In these early years, Jack Lord was coolness personified and the show was a no nonsense gritty AND entertaining drama.

Unlike in the latter years, in those early seasons, McGarrett's anger never appeared contrived or forced - you really felt this man's rage! Circa 1974 this changed and McGarrett's spontaneous outburst against life's injustices became elongated rants to whoever was within ear shot.

Additionally, the big attraction of the show was how one week you could see a light-hearted episode and the next you'd see a hard hitting thought provoking instalment - season 4 demonstrates this nicely, `Odd Man In' and then `Skinhead' could hardly be more different, but they were encompassed together within the same season. This kind of contrast was rife in the early years and,...

Miles From Nowhere

Miles from No Where
I enjoyed this movie because of the values that can be learned. There are consequenses for our actions. Mistakes can be forgiven. There are times when we must choose what is right for us over what is popular. Excellent for teens.

Wonderful Movie!!!
This movie reduced me to tears and at the same time filled me with inspiration. The acting is excellent and the storyline kept me interested, I really came to care about these characters. Do yourself a favor, buy this movie and enjoy it with your entire family.

Great great film.

Designing Women: The Complete Third Season

Excied that season 3 is coming out in March
Season 3 of Designing Women has several great episodes. The Naked Truth- is where we meet Suzanne and Julia's nieces, who are just carbon copies of the sisters.
Mr. Bailey- the decorators decorate a house of a woman who has recently died and left everything to Mr. Bailey, her cat.
Tyrone- this gives more insight to Anthony's past, and how far Anthony has come with the help of the ladies.
One Sees, the Other Doesn't- a personal favorite of mine. Suzanne has met a man who is blind- and learns that even though he can't see her, he "sees" her.
Bill and Charlene get engaged, and married in this season- which makes for some great episodes- from the engagement and Charlene asking Julia for tips on how to be classy while Julia is at a frat party, to the wedding- where Bill and Charlene both get handcuffed to the exotic dancer.
I am glad this season is coming out- keep the seasons coming, Shout!

Episode listing
Here are the episodes from Season 3:

"Julia Drives Over the First Ammendment" - Julia gets into trouble with a local publisher after she drives through a newsstand selling pornography.

"The Last Humorously-Dressed Bellboy in America" - Suzanne's crooked accountant offers her a deal.

"Stand and Fight" - The designing women take a self-defense class after Mary Jo is mugged.

"The Women of Atlanta" - A photographer asks the ladies to pose for a "Women of Atlanta" photo spread.

"Come On and Marry Me Bill" - Charlene finds her fiancée handcuffed to a stripper after his bachelor party.

"The Engagement" - Charlene meets Bill's mother and aunt.

"Ms. Meal Ticket" - Mary Jo is upset after J.D. loses his job and moves in with her.

"Full Moon" - Mary Jo is convinced that her daughter Claudia and her boyfriend are fooling around.

"Odell" - Charlene's brother arrives and announces that he is...

Season 3 -uncut and funny as ever.
I have almost completed the entire season 3 of Designing Women and it's only been out for a week. The episodes on this release are all running between 23:10-23:40 which is on par with prior seasons and I haven't noticed anything edited out at all. There are some truly hilarious episodes here such at The Junies, Naked Truth, and Full Moon. I can't wait for the rest of the seasons to come out!

Wish Me Luck: Series One

Brilliant!
To anyone who has taken an interest in the work of SOE during the War Years this series is absolutely brilliant.A lot of research has gone into the making of this series and the detail and background is second to none.If you are looking for a lot of action, you may be dissappointed,as the series does tend to concentrate on the people involved and the effect it has on their lives and the people involved in their lives.but this all makes for very real and believable drama. The characters portayed are very much based on real people involved, and the series does show how the different "social" barriers were overcome during these times. It doesn't tend to overglamourise the situation, and portrays the dangers the agents faced on a day to day basis.

As someone who has a keen interest in the work of SOE I would thoughly recommend this series.

My only concern is when are they going to release the 2nd and 3rd series ?

Undercover in occupied France
I have this series on VHS and, after having watched it at least three times, still really enjoy it. I find it well-written, well-acted, well-paced, and an interesting take on the usual male spy story. As a woman, I admittedly enjoy stories about women who succeed at difficult tasks. The two women who star in this series face an extremely difficult task--to pass as Frenchwomen in occupied France, despite having spent the majority of their lives in England, while passing secrets under the noses of the ever-watchful Germans. Unlike another reviewer, I won't try to say whether members of the other sex will like it or not. I don't see it as a chick flick at all--simply as a story about spies in WWII which features the women who were spies, as well as the men. Jill Hyem is a fine writer and this is fine WWII drama. If you're looking for lots of battle scenes, however, this isn't it. This is about people, not weapons, and life among the enemy. I recommend it.

Rich view of another side of the war
Finally, an exploration of WW II that demonstrates that women can be brave, loyal, daring and patriotic. For all the compelling war movies out there, its very rare that women are allowed those noble qualities as they are usually subjugated to the role of lover, femme fatal, wife, mother or child. "Wish Me Luck" features women, in all their various personal roles, but also engaged in the war to save their nation. Refreshing! For the insecure among you who need bang-bangs to reassure you there's a war going on, yes, look elsewhere for your pyrotechnics. "Wish Me Luck" tells the story of three "Baker Street Irregulars" -- or members of the British Special Operations Executive - spies sent to France to assist the resistance movement. Although the British series ran for 23 episodes, only the first 8 have made it to DVD (we can all hope for more) and follow two women and a man from training through their perilous missions in France. Subtle, thoughtful and filled with great period...

ESPN Films 30 for 30: Small Potatoes: Who Killed The USFL?

Don't Forget the USFL...
This is an excellent, little, "biography" of the short and bumpy life of the United States Football League. Since the league started nearly thirty years ago, and vanished within three short seasons, many younger football fans today may not even remember the league, or the fact that it was a proving ground for many (later) NFL stars; Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Herschel Walker, Doug Flutie, and many others.
This ESPN film also makes Donald Trump look exactly like the league-killing, ego-maniac putz that he actually was (and is).
Only one quibble: nary a mention of the Denver Gold and its owner, Ron Blanding. He caught a great deal of flack, back in the day, for being cheap, and not spending his team into oblivion to get a couple big-name players. But he actually had it right. The Gold was the only team that made money, and stuck to the owners' original financial plan.
Still, the whole ESPN 30 for 30 series was great, and this entry is one of the best.

Outstanding!! Don't forget this fine film by Mike Tollin (or the USFL)!!
Mike Tollin, a former league employee (who
helped 'make' The Donald, in a football
sense, recaptured in this important film,
a very important part of football, and my
first job out of college. Thank you very
little, Donald Trump. And I won't be voting
for you for President! Pick Up On It!

A great look back at a rival football league and how Donald Trump helped kill it
Just as the USFL is a footnote today, the documentary of it has been overlooked amid the other "30 for 30" films. That's a shame as this hour long feature is a fun look back at the creation of the United States Football League, an attempt at summer football that began in 1983 after pulling off the shocking signing of college star Herschel Walker. The league did have surprising success thanks to exposure on a young ESPN and some actually good players and games. Michael Tollin helped the USFL create their video packages and thus his direction gives unique insight to the league (if a bit self-serving on it success). He delves less on how it began and more on how it fell apart as owners (especially Donald Trump) made the mistake of reaching too far too soon, wanting to go head-to-head with the NFL before they were ready. The highlight of the doc is Tollin meeting Trump today, the man incredibly rude and arrogant, claiming he was the only one who could make the USFL a success and literally...

The Princess and The Frog (Three Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)

Wish upon a star. Then get to work!
Bam! It's appropriate that Emeril Lagasse plays a (bit) character in The Princess and the Frog, voicing Marlon the `gator. This film proves that Disney's once-vaunted hand-drawn animation is back with a vengeance.

The film has gorgeous visuals, engaging characters, a palpably evil villain and gags galore. Randy Newman's New Orleans-influenced score perfectly complements the story. It is laugh-out-loud funny. The romance between leads Tiana and Prince Naveen is touching and believable. The film's strong, down-to-earth message: You can't just wish upon a star for your dreams to come true. You'll have to work. Hard.

Folks looking for a quality, old-school Disney film will not be disappointed. Like all the best Disney classics, The Princess and the Frog adapts a classic fairy tale and adds twists and wit. This story of hardworking Tiana, aspiring New Orleans restauranteur, and her froggy adventures will engage children and charm their parents. It's a movie that both...

The Disney Magic is Back!
I don't understand why people complain about the lack of good family fair and then shy away from going to see "The Princess and the Frog", the new traditionally animated film from Disney. This is a good film and the lack of business it is creating may cause Disney to rethink their current change in course.

A few years ago, John Lasseter, the force behind all of the Pixar hits, was promoted to oversee many different aspects of Disney. He did something I don't think a lot of people expected. He restarted production of traditionally animated, hand drawn feature films, a type of filmmaking all but abandoned (due to cost; computer animation is a lot cheaper) at a studio now making digital animation. He hired the team behind "The Little Mermaid" and they chose to make "The Princess and the Frog", the first Disney film featuring an African American heroine.

New Orleans, the 20s. Tiana (Anika Nani Rose, "Dreamgirls", "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency") is a practical...

Disney's first American classic fairytale
The Disney Studio has made a return to its hand-drawn roots (with the aid of some computer technology of course) with its first hand-drawn animated fairy tale in many years. It is also the first time the studio has set one of their fairytales in America. Tiana (voiced expertly by Anika Noni Rose of Dreamgirls[Blu-ray]) is a young girl in 1920's New Orleans. She is focused on making her late father's dream come true of opening her own restaurant; this leaves no time for love or fun. Enter Naveen of Maldonia, a handsome prince who has been disinherited by his family for his laziness. Tiana and Naveen are brought together even though they are polar opposites because of the black voodoo magic of the evil Doctor Facilier. The two are forced to journey together to get what they both think they want...which naturally changes along the way. No plot spoilers here...this rich movie needs to be experienced personally...

ESPN Films 30 for 30: The Legend Of Jimmy The Greek

Fascinating and incredible story!
I knew little of 'the Greek' and found this dvd amazing! I have already watched it dozens of times and still find it captivating... no joke. The less you know about his life, the more reason you should buy this dvd. The extra footage interviews are another added bonus! You won't be disappointed.

The Rise and Fall of Jimmy the Greek
Jimmy the Greek was a staple of CBS football fare from about 1976 to 1988. Paired with Brent Musburger, Phyllis George, and Irv Cross, the CBS pregame football show OWNED TV viewership. The Greek brought Las Vegas betting odds to middle class America for the first time. The Greek was a favorite of fans until he made some unfortunate comments that ended up quite badly for him. In fact, the comments were so contentious that in a moment's time, Jimmy the Greek's career took a complete nosedive.

This video is quite comprehensive in its approach to Jimmy the Greek Snyder. It begins with his birth, how he got into gambling, his career in Las Vegas, his career with CBS Sports, and then his abrupt decline from fame. There are interviews with those close to the Greek, especially his son and Brent Musburger. In order to tell his story to the fullest, the documentary creates an actor who speaks for Jimmy the Greek, and this is quite effective, for it reveals insights into his...

One of the better offerings in ESPN's excellent '30 for 30' series
Fritz Mitchell's entry into ESPN's excellent '30 for 30' series has been one of the better ones. While not hitting the heights of my two favorites, the Zimbalist brothers' amazing ESPN Films 30 for 30: The Two Escobars and Vlade Divac's emotional, stirring Once Brothers, Mitchell's tale of The Greek is a Greek tragedy, a compelling tale of a unlikely TV star who shot to unexpected fame and then tumbled into banishment and obscurity, the fallout from one controversial interview.

Producer/director Mitchell does a good job putting us back to what life was like in 70s: domination of the three networks; CBS' 'The NFL Today' as the show everyone watched; and Irv, Jimmy, Brent and Phyllis as 'A List' personalities, only first names required. You'd turn in just to watch the dynamics between the protagonists, what with Brent and Jimmy...

Soldier Love Story

Finally! A Good Romance including family and spirituality!
Loughlin (Dana) plays a young professional and single parent who went through a divorce and has custody of a 10 yr old son (Jared). Starting their new life they move 1600 miles from the only home Jared has ever known.
Dana and Jared move in with Dana's mother played by Stephanie Powers. It was great seeing Stephanie Powers acting and offering light but powerful spiritual suggestions and at times great motherly and grandmotherly advice.
Dana is teaching her 10 yr old son some important life lessons that on occasion are spiritual. I love the way she teaches him to look for and be thankful for things they have. Spirituality is not over-done but instead very beautifully planted!
Dana starts a new job, Jared starts a new school and together they start a new life. Jared's biological father moves far a way and makes empty promises to spend time with him.
Randomly chosen Jared's teacher assigns the students to write a letter to soldiers. Jared writes to Sergeant Vince...

Loved this movie!
L LOVE THIS FILM! It's sweet and endearing. The connection between the young boy and the soldier seemed was so heartwarming, and the drama of the absentee father brings great balance to this movie. I absolutely loved the chemistry between the boy's mother and the soldier. The centeral theme--love can overcome any obstacles in life--is a powerful one, and I think the element of faith just reinforces the central theme quite nicely. I have to agree with one of the previous reviewer's comments--I'd like to see a sequel to this movie!

Learning to trust again
The story has been well reviewed already. I want to add that the element of faith in this movie is what makes it worthwhile to me. The soldier and the single mom have each been hurt by someone they loved and now, through faith that God has a plan for them, they learn to trust their feelings to another person again. The young boy has also found a man he can look up to and depend on, after being disappointed in the lack of caring shown by his own father. Stephanie Powers plays a woman who has experienced pain in her own past, and though they don't dwell on her situation long, the realization that her mother has been through it all before and still has faith helps Dana be strong.

It may be a predictable outcome, but there is substance to the message that makes it more than just another romance.

Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season

As Good as The Shield and The Sopranos
I'll try to keep this short. If you've read the other reviews, you know the premise of the show. It has received many accolades and some awards. But you know what, there are many really good shows out there now, and it can be hard to keep up with all of them. So if you are still undecided as to whether this show is worth an investment of your time and money, I hope this helps.

If are an avid fan of the Sopranos and The Shield, you will love Breaking Bad.

Do you remember how both of those shows would, at their very best, leave you staring at the screen, with your heart pounding, saying to yourself "Holy S---"? Well, there are moments like that in Breaking Bad. Like the Sopranos, it effectively mixes dark comedy and violence. Like The Shield, it has episodes and plotlines that are incredibly intense. And like both of those shows, it features a protagonist leading a double life. The performance of Bryan Cranston, like those of James Gandolfini and Micheal...

The best thing on TV these days
I watch A LOT of TV and I can honestly say there has never been a show that was so riveting and so gripping from beginning to end as Breaking Bad. This show is a masterpiece through and through.

During the first season, we come to see how Bryan Cranston's character (acted brilliantly, by the way) could not be any more desperate. And just when you think things couldn't get more low, in comes season two with more problems and more desperation.

I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen this season, but my God, if you haven't seen it, get this DVD collection it will be so worth your time.

Surpasses the first in every way
Now that everything was established in the short first season (writers strike) the second season gets things really going.

I will not spoil but I will say this show is now falling into history. It's one of the greatest shows of all time and will most likely only get better from here.

Faded Glory

Faded Glory
A great sports film about baseball... made by baseball players for baseball players and those who love them! It's never too late and you are never too old to relive the glory days!

Life, Baseball, Life
Faded Glory is a movie for everyone. While it's main storyline has to do with a Baseball team, the themes, dreams, and real life experiences relate to all of us. As a 46 year old ex-jock who still "laces" them up, I loved the stories of heart ache and achievements, lost love, and sucessful romances, wild party boys, and strict regimen followers. The movie was able to combine comedy, laughter, sadness and even tragedy into a well organized film. This movie should hit a nerve in all of us, in one way or another.

Not just a sports documentary
This documentary amply demonstrates that the competitive spirit still thrives even after skills have been diminished by age and injury, and, that it takes more than skill to win the game. But, the deeper story is the relationship between Rick and his father. It's a love letter from a son to his father.

Pulling John

LOVE IT!
This DVD is awesome! It looks like a game, and comes with super cool special features! John Breznek is so cool! I doubt you will not enjoy this film as it is fun!!

Pulled Me In!
I don't recall how I stumbled onto this watch. If you are reading this, find it and take the time to enjoy.

This documentary follows an alarmingly understated champion John Brzenk sparingly. His demeanor explains why there was more time spent on the two contenders who have spent their life training to dethrone Brzenk. When you watch it, look out for the quote explaining why John chose his profession - outside of armwrestling. Brilliant!

The pace and content will make you care for all three and your heart pump at the competition climax. From the very beginning, I was glued to the story. It simply could not have been done more concisely or better. This is a wonderful, tasteful, and enjoyable true story.

As for armwrestling, you need NOT be a fan and for us dopes, there is a great and short tutorial on strategy, etc. You will also discover another incredible fact about "one champion." You'll see.....

Overall, this is an excellent watch...

Surprisingly Good!
I am not a documentary nor arm wrestling fan, but I just started seeing someone who enjoys the sport. I was really surprised how well the film flowed and how I got so into the movie that I had to see the ending. Its more than an arm wrestling movie, its what a movie is suppose to do - it moves you. My heart would speed up during the competition scenes like I was there in the room. Really like this.

Tom and Jerry: The Movie

Awful. An insult to true Tom & Jerry fans...
In the later period of the Tom & Jerry shows, a European
animation company (Dutch, I think) made some of the worst
ever attempts at Tom & Jerry ever seen. They had none of
the atmosphere or spirit of the classics. They were badly
drawn, had terrible sound effects and little of the
memorable big-band orchestra music which Tom & Jerry was
well-known for...
Why do I mention this?
Well, I'll tell you...
It's because even those awful, late Tom & Jerry episodes
were a whole lot better than this absolutely terrible movie.

"Tom & Jerry - The Movie" is an insult to the fans and almost
tarnishes the memory of the greatest cartoon characters of
all-time.

Stick to the originals!!!

GREAT MOVIE!
BRINGS BACK MEMORIES WHEN I WAS A KID AND WATCHED THIS CARTOON BACK IN JAPAN! WATCHING WITH MY DAUGHTER NOW 40 YEARS LATER! WE BOTH LOVE IT!!!

A great choice for an animated movie.
I put this movie right at the top of my favorites list. The voice characterizations and personalities of Tom and Jerry were outstanding. There are 'very few' animated movies that can make me cry and laugh through them. This one truly is a great animated comedy as well as plenty of drama. Very well done.

Tayutama: Kiss on My Deity

Jumpy
Starts out strong, but too many distractions in the storyline to be cohesive. Plot is simple enough to defeat 3 strong enemies, but the 1st and the 2nd were almost immediate. The 3rd was hard, but the buildup wasn't there due to the focus of the underlying love plots.

Characters were cute. The goddess and the 2 best friends. The little sister and even the dad. Alot of focus on relationships, but in hesitating middle school fashion. Was a little disappointed.

Good entertainment though.

very good anime
if you looking for something thats nice and of course adorable then this is it for you. for me i already seen this anime over 2 times already, of course it has some flaws but its still good and the story is pretty good and cute for me and if i enjoyed it then i know others will too. It is also good to have on your collection as well.

video
The video is good with the storyline of a goddess and spirits. The action is good with the romantic sense.

Silk Stalkings: Season one

One of Cannell's Best Shows
Silk Stalkings was yet another show from the fertive mind and studio of Stephen J. Cannell, and was one of (if not the) longest running of his hour long shows. Silk Stalkings originally debuted on CBS as part of the late Friday night Crime Time After Primetime slot but that was soon cancelled and it became a cable only show airing on USA Network as they had entered into a co-production deal with CBS originally.

The show lasted eight years in all and, as so many shows do, ended on a never resolved cliffhanger. But that's a long way into the future and with the ex-husband and wife team of Tom and Cassie. This first season is pure gold as we are introduced to Rita Lee Lance and Chris Lorenzo of the Palm Beach Police Department's Homicide division.

In the first few episodes Rita is a much harder character than she is for most of the rest of her run. It seems that she has an inoperable brain tumour that makes her take risks no normal cop would take. This little...

Chris & Rita: Great dramatic chemistry and Capital "S" Style
1991 represented a unique opportunity for U.S. TV show creators. Unlike today, when cable networks make up much of the original programming, there were few markets for new shows. The fledgling Fox network was only four years old, and the triumvirate of broadcasting giants (ABC, CBS, and NBC) had the power of dinosaurs. But there was a hiccup in late-night scheduling: David Letterman had signed a new contract to host a talk show on CBS, but his NBC contract still had two years to run. So CBS decided to run a slate of dramatic fare -- five new shows to keep the seat warm for Letterman -- which they called "Crime Time After Primetime". Stephen J. Cannell, creator of literally dozens of TV shows, had something called "Silk Stalkings" that he'd been working on for a few years; he pitched it, got the go-ahead, and quickly went into production.

This was a cop show featuring a pair of Palm Beach (Florida) police detectives who specialized in crimes of passion in that enclave...

A pioneer in the cable drama series genre...
Nominated for only one Emmy, the entertainment quality of Silk Stalkings is nevertheless evidenced by its nine season run which is one of the most enduring ever for an original cable TV series. Partly responsible for this lack of critical acclaim is that Silk Stalkings was a trailblazer in the cable genre, and handing out Emmys to original cable series didn't become fashionable until the late-1990s when Sex And The City and The Sopranos broke the cable barrier for good. Another contributing factor to the lack of peer recognition is that Silk Stalkings lasted about four seasons longer than it should have, given that nearly the entire cast and crew were replaced after the first five seasons. Regardless, this hour-long drama series set in Palm Beach, Florida contains all the necessary ingredients for a hit show - beautiful people in a beautiful setting with lots of murder, violence, and intrigue. Silk Stalkings offers everything one could ask for in a TV drama, and the show's success...
